Laten we maar direct beginnen met het belangrijkste nieuws: Shell gaat begin volgend jaar weer terug naar New Orleans. Het Shell gebouw is er weer klaar voor. De verwachting is dat de stad tegen die tijd ook weer voldoende hersteld is. In ons team wil de helft liever in Houston blijven (waaronder wij). De andere helft wil zo snel mogelijk terug. Het compromis is dat we tot de zomer in Houston kunnen blijven, zodat de kinderen het schooljaar af kunnen maken. Elke week reist Frans dan 1 of 2 dagen naar New Orleans. De rest werkt hij vanuit het Houston kantoor.
Let us directly start with the most important news: Shell will return to New Orleans early next year. The Shell building is ready. The expectation is that the city will be sufficiently recovered as well by that time. In our team about half would rather stay in Houston (including us). The other half wants to go back as soon as possible. The compromise is that we can stay in Houston until the summer to let the children finish the school year. Every week Frans will travel to New Orleans 1 or 2 days. The rest he will work from the Houston office.
Hierna het tweede belangrijke nieuws: We komen voor 2 weken naar Nederland van 18 – 30 December. Aankomst op 18 December is 11:40 op Schiphol. Vertrek 30 December is 13:40.
After this the second important news: We come for 2 weeks to the Netherlands from 18 – 30 December. Arrival on 18 December is 11:40 at Schiphol. Departure 30 December is 13:40.
Ondertussen is hier het leventje weer enigszins tot rust gekomen in Houston. De kinderen doen het goed op school. Elke Maandag gaan ze in het net naar school.
Meanwhile life has calmed down in Houston. The kids are doing well at school. Every Monday they go to school all dressed up.
Aan ons huis in Kenner is nog niet veel gebeurd. Het gat in het dak is afgedekt met plastic. De eigenaar wacht op de verzekeringsagent die de schade op moet nemen. Veel huiseigenaren moeten lang wachten voordat ze weten hoeveel geld ze krijgen voor herbouw. Vorige week hoorden we ook dat huizen die grote schade hebben gehad opgehoogd moeten worden tot boven de vloedlijn (zeeniveau plus opstuwing van het water door een zware orkaan). Voor ons huis zou dat 1 meter betekenen. Dit kan grote vertraging opleveren. Ook zijn mensen die dit werk kunnen doen schaars. We denken dan ook aan het huren van een ander huis. Alleen het is heel moeilijk te voorspellen hoe de huizenmarkt zich zal ontwikkelen. De huizen die ondergelopen zijn, worden minder gewild. De droge huizen zijn schaars en worden veel meer waard. Nu al zijn de huizenprijzen in de droge wijken sterk gestegen. De huurmarkt voor huizen met 4 slaapkamers was al erg krap en dit helpt niet echt!
Not much has happened to our house in Kenner. The hole in the roof has been covered with plastic. The owner waits for the adjuster to judge the damage. Many house owners need to wait for a long time to know how much money they'll get for rebuilding. Last week we also heard that houses with lots of damage need to be raised above the flood level(sea level plus surge from a heavy hurricane). For our house that would mean 3 feet. This can mean significant delays. Also it is difficult to find the contractors to do this work. So we're thinking of getting ourselves another house. However it is hard to predict how the house market will develop. The houses that have flooded loose value. The houses that have stayed dry signigicantly increase in value. Already the price of houses in dry areas have increased significantly. The rental market for 4 bedroom houses was already tight and this doesn't really help!
Ondertussen zijn we hier op zoek naar een kerk waar de kinderen ook een goede tienergroep hebben. We hebben de Vineyard kerken hier bezocht. Vooral een Vineyard in downtown Houston beviel goed. Ze hebben ook celgroepen bij ons in de buurt. We gaan daar deze vrijdag op bezoek. Ook zijn we in de Lakewood kerk geweest. Dit is een TV kerk die hun diensten hebben in het vorige basketbalstadion van de Houston Rockets. Daarin kunnen 16.000 mensen en het zat voor het merendeel vol! Per weekend hebben ze 4 diensten.
In the meantime we are looking for a church that also has a good youth group for our kids. We have visited a couple of Vineyard churches. In particular we enjoyed the Vineyard church downtown Houston. They also have a cell group near us. We’ll go there this Friday. We've also visited Lakewood church. This is a TV church who have their services in the previous basketball stadium of the Houston Rockets. This stadium can house 16,000 people en it was almost full! Every weekend there are 4 services.
Frans speelt regelmatig golf en heeft zijn handicap al onder de 20 zien komen. Dat gaat steeds beter. Ook Zefanja speelt een aardig balletje mee overdag of 's avonds op een geheel verlichte 18 holes golfbaan.
Frans regularly plays golf and his handicap has already gone down to 20. It is going better and better. Also Zefanja plays quite well during the day or at night on a fully lighted 18 holes course.
Zefanja heeft de American Football afgesloten en is inmiddels keeper bij het voetbalteam. Rebecca houdt nog steeds vooral van trainen in de sportzaal. Sarah miste het zwemmen zo dat ze weer is begonnen bij een club buiten school.
Zefanja has finished the American Football semester and is now goal keeper with the soccer team. Rebecca still mostly enjoys training in the gym. Sarah missed swimming so much that she's gone back to a swimming club outside school.
Afgelopen weekend zijn we naar een traditioneel dorpje geweest vlak ten noorden van Houston: Old Town Spring. In dit dorp zien de huisjes er nog al van ouds uit. In veel huisjes zijn winkels met oude ambachten gevestigd.
Last weekend we've been to a traditional village just north of Houston: Old Town Spring. In this village the houses have kept their old appearance. In many houses little shops show old crafts.
Ook zijn verschillende landen vertegenwoordigd . Hieronder zie je het Holland huis: Little Dutch Girl.

Natuurlijk verkopen ze hier Hollandse drop, stroopwafels, chocolade en veel Delfts blauw.
Of course they sell Dutch liquorice, syrup waffles, chocolate and much Delft Blue porselain.
In een echte ouderwetse Amerikaanse bar eten we een hamburger. Smaakt beter dan bij de McDonalds, maar je moet er wel langer op wachten.
In a real traditional American bar we eat a hamburger. Tasts better than at McDonalds, but you do need to wait quite a bit longer.
We zien ernaar uit jullie allemaal weer te zien.
